NBA - Celtics defeated Pistons and their new star Iverson
By Ally White
The current NBA Champion and dominant team Boston Celtics defeated the Detroit Pistons with an incredible defense, winning 88-76 and giving Iverson a disappointing start in his first game at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
The new star of the Pistons, Allen Iverson, tried to help the team but he only achieved 10 points, 4 assists and 4 turnovers on the game. Iverson expressed to the press that adapting to the team and playing together will take some time but he expects the best this year for Detroit. This is Detroit second lost in the preseason, having a record of 4-2 at the present.
On the other hand, for the Celtics this is their fourth consecutive victory and their expectations are flying high this season as they want to keep winning and grasp the NBA title again. Coach Doc Rivers is really pleased with his players’ performance, attitudes and roles in and off the court. Simply all the Celtic’s players are conscious of their roles and expectations and that’s the difference between a good team and an excellent one. The Boston defense has been spectacular and their bench is contributing enormously.
According to Coach Rivers, they had their best defense of the year by far during the entire game, “We had active hands, were physical, got up in their bodies, and it was neat to see. Also our bench has been phenomenal. We've started out slow in three or four games, but the energy of the bench has been tremendous. There isn't one guy that carries them,” he said.
The game started completely on Celtics side as they were winning the first half 30-10 and the Pistons shooting poorly with only a 25% of effectiveness. In the second half the contribution from the bench of Tony Allen was extraordinary as he scored 14 points in that half (23 points in total), helping Boston to finish the first half with a score of 47-29. The defense of Boston was so extreme that even Hamilton couldn’t score, he was averaging 20 points per game but against Boston, Hamilton couldn’t score a single point out of his 8 attempts. Whereas, Rasheed Wallace scored 4 of 17 attempts and Iverson only scored 4 of 11 attempts.
The Pistons recognize that they need to get familiar with each other, but they know that with the time things will turn out positive for them. The franchise is sure that with the acquisition of Iverson, the team will get more offensive as this point guard can create great plays for them. The team just needs to find the connection with every piece of the puzzle and understand the role that each one has on the team and accept it. Anyhow, this was only the second game of the team with Iverson, so they have plenty of adaptation to make. We hope to see a good Detroit team this year.
On the other hand, the Boston Celtics are definitely a strong and difficult team, which has been proven in every game they have played. The players know things may not happen the way they want all the time, but if they stick together as they did last year and this preseason, the result for them will be quite positive. Still it has to be remembered that besides the unification of the team, they have also great players such as the “Big Three” Garnett, Pierce, Allen and specially a bench of players that are accepting their role for the good of the team. So watch out for this great defensive team.
