Wheldon’s Victory in the Opening of the Indy Car Series 2007

By Audrey Nolan

The start for the Indy Car Series 2007 season was a little unusual; with every body following the leader Dan Wheldon in the first 100 laps and then a three car accident which ended up in a full field pit-stop that sent him back to the ninth place, fact that motivated him to win the race.

With 11 laps left, Wheldon planed his way back and he claimed his third consecutive Indy Car Series victory at Homestead-Miami Speedway by 6.499 seconds over teammate Scott Dixon, the largest margin of victory in more than two years at an Indy Car Series oval race.

"It was a great way to open up the season," Wheldon said. "We worked very hard over the winter to perfect what we started last year. I think I underestimated the difficulty of coming to a new team, so a lot of credit goes to the engineering staff, especially Andy Brown, who has done a fantastic job" he said.

At Homestead, Wheldon has led 345 out of 600 since 2005 and he became the first series driver to win the same race three years in a row. His three wins at Homestead matched the record at the 1.5-mile Florida oval by third-place finisher Sam Hornish Jr., who won here in 2001, '02 and '04. This is good for Wheldon’s Championship aspirations; winning the opening race of the season is very important.

Many believe and hope that what happened on Saturday is not an indicator on how the season will go, there are a lot of drivers and different teams that have a lot of capacity, but Wheldon’s performance of last Saturday was very significant; will this give him a second Indy Car Series Crown?
