American League History

The American League had the same 8 teams when it started as the National League. These were: Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Blues, Washington Senators, Boston Americans, Milwaukee Brewers and the Philadelphia Athletics.

Only 4 of this teams still play on the same cities that they started back in 1901, Cleveland, Boston, Detroit and Chicago. Only the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers have kept their name through the years. The rest made changes, Boston American (Boston red Sox), Cleveland Blues (Cleveland Indians), Philadelphia Athletics (Oakland Athletics), Washington Senators (Minnesota Twins) and the Milwaukee Brewers were known as the Saint Louis Browns and today are the Baltimore Orioles.

One new league came up in 1914, the Federal League, but it only lasted one year. Expansion to include more teams has occurred four times in the American league since its beginnings in 1961.

In 1902, the new National agreement among the two major leagues was signed, this agreement open the doors to the most desirable title in Major League Baseball (MLB), the famous World Series championship title, this event that has been held annually since 1903, except for the years of 1904 and 1994. The New York Yankees has captured the most titles (26) in 39 appearances.
