NFL Football History

There is nothing quite like going to a live NFL game. Some of the best teams to see in action on the gridiron are the New England Patriots with Tom Brady and the Dallas Cowboys  with Terrel Owens. Seeing the plays form right in front of you and the touchdowns scored is an experience no one should miss.  Of course the greatest show on earth, the Super Bowl, is a must-see as well!

Most of the modern editions of football originated in England. In the incoming centuries football reached force and became so popular that various English monarchs, including Edward II and Henry VI, prohibited the game because it took away interest away from the military sport of archery, which is funny at some point, now in days happens pretty much the same.

In the 19th century, football split into two different units. Still popular today, these two sports were soccer and rugby. American football has developed from these two sports. The first league of professional football teams was the American Professional Football Association, formed in 1920. The American Professional Football Association formed the basis of the NFL in 1922.

Red Grange, provided an incredible motivation for the league when he joined the Chicago Bears in 1925. His exciting play was so effective that it drew large crowds. From then on, professional football the increased support made the league economically practicable. The two teams that dominated the league in terms of success in the postseason are San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys who between them have ten Super Bowl titles. Texas based businessman Lamar Hunt established the American Football League (AFL) in 1960 as a competitor to the NFL.

The teams in the new league included the Houston Oilers, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Oakland Raiders, and the New York Jets. The two leagues shared a great animosity and fought bitterly for players, media attention, and profits. In 1966, the two leagues merged.

The first AFL-NFL World Championship Game, featured the AFL-champion Chiefs and the NFL-champion Packers. The Packers won the contest, which was later renamed Super Bowl I.

Before the Super Bowl from 1969 there was still a championship game that was played between the National Football Conference (NFC) title holders and the winners of the American Football Conference (AFC).
