Los Angeles Galaxy is an American professional soccer team, with headquarters in Los Angeles and competes in the Major League Soccer. The name of "Galaxy" refers to Los Angeles, home of many Hollywood "movie stars".
Los Angeles Galaxy is one of the ten founders of the MLS; this team began to play in 1996. Its first stadium was the historic Rose Bowl Stadium until was transferred in 2003, to its own stadium, the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
Since the 2005 season, the Home Depot Center has been shared with its rival Chivas USA, a team of the same city.
Los Angeles Galaxy has two main supporters' clubs known as The Galaxians, and The Los Angeles Riot Squad. Its mascot is known like "Cozmo", an extraterrestrial frog. |
LA Galaxy is the second team with more national titles earned (2 titles), behind D.C. United. Besides, among with D.C. United, are the only two American teams in winning the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Its two MLS titles were obtained in the years 2002 and 2005. The 2002 title went against the New England Revolution, with a goal of the Guatemalan Carlos "Pescadito" Ruiz and that of the 2005 was obtained thanks to another golden goal, this time of the Guatemalan Guillermo "Pando" Ramírez, against the same New England Revolution. LA Galaxy have besides a CONCACAF Champions Cup title obtained in the 2000 against the Olimpia of Honduras, being this their only international title up to now.
January 11, 2007 was announced the signing of the English player David Beckham after the finish of his contract with the Real Madrid, being incorporated to the team in June 2007. The player signed for a total of $250 million by the five seasons in which he will defend to the Los Angeles club.
