Lacrosse History
- Lacrosse is considered one of the fastest growing sports in the world
- The European Lacrosse Federation (ELF) is the executive body for European lacrosse which includes women's and men's teams.
- The sport has developed in many European countries and has leagues in approximately 18 countries.
- Lacrosse is considered the oldest North American sport. The discipline was rooted in Native American religion and it was played to resolve conflicts, heal the sick, and develop tough men.
- Europeans in Canada began playing the game early 19th century
- In 1844 the Montreal's Olympic Club organized a team which was to play a match against a Native American team.
- In 1867 the sport became quite popular in Bristol, Cheshire, Lancashire, London, Manchester, and Yorkshire.
- The first women's lacrosse game was played in 1890 at the St. Leonard's School in Scotland
- Starting in 1904 Lacrosse became an Olympic sportat St. Louis and in 1908 at London. Only three countries, Canada, England, and the United States, were represented and Canada obtained both gold medals.
- Sine 1967 the International Lacrosse Federation (ILF) has conducted a men's world championship tournament.
